Today was a pretty quiet day, at least compared to yesterday. I woke up bright and early and got ready then my roommates and I went downstairs for breakfast. French breakfast is very different from American breakfast. There's no heavy food like pancakes, omelets, waffles, sausage, bacon, or french toast. If you go out you can get a bigger breakfast, but at the Foyer they keep it simple with just large chunks of French bread, a few varieties of jam, butter, coffee, and juice.
After eating breakfast, we went to our first day of classes. First off was French History, starting with Caesar's successful campaign to capture Gaul. The class will cover everything from then until the twentieth century, though somewhat briefly because of its large scope. The next class was my literature class. I was told it was called Paris in Songs and Poems, but considering the fact that we're also reading a novel and a play, I'm going to call it Paris in Literature.
After a lunch of leftover pizza and pain au chocolat from a nearby pâtisserie, I went to my last class, which is Contemporary French Civilization. This class will cover Paris in the last century, but the focus will be on the last twenty years or so.
After class I worked on some homework then went out to get groceries and dinner with one of my roommates (Laura). For dinner I had a delicious freshly made crêpe with egg, ham, and cheese and an orangina (a type of carbonated orange juice). My original plan was to sit on the rooftop terrace while I ate dinner and worked on the last of my homework, but when I discovered a group of other students in my program sitting up there, my plan to do homework didn't last.
Instead I finished my homework in my room a bit later and am now preparing for bed. Tomorrow's going to be another long day of classes, but the good news is that we also have an outing to look forward to!
